The Bangor Girls tennis team defeated Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg today in a highly anticipated match of two teams with unblemished records in the Colonial League North. Notre Dame arrived shorthanded and was forced to forfeit a point at 3rd Singles. The Slaters won easily at 2nd singles, as senior Allison DeSario disposed of her oppnent 6-1, 6-1. The first doubles tandem of Erica Nicoletti and Olivia Smith started strong with a first set victory of 6-2, then lost their way and the match, 6-2, 1-6, 0-6. At second doubles, Brittany Brewer and Rehana Khan played a fine match. The first set was back and forth, with Bangor finally prevailing 7-5. With a set under their belt, the two stomped on Notre Dame in the second set, and won the match 7-5, 6-1. All the while, there was some great tennis taking place on court 1. With all other matches complete (even a three setter at first dubs), Elizabeth Bina (B) and Nicole Koscidniak (ND) were fighting tooth and nail for every point. The points seemed endless and the two played some outstanding tennis in front of a large contingency of fans and family. Ultimately, Notre Dame scored the victory with a strong finish, defeating Bina the final four games to win 6-4, 6-3.
Overall the victory was as hollow as it was important. The deciding match was a forfeit, and these two teams will clash again this coming Friday at Great Bear Country Club. The Slaters are looking to stay hot and have a lot of work to do to maintain their current grip on the Colonial League North and a 4th consecutive playoff berth under coach Michael Cohen.
The Slaters play their next match on Monday, with a dual match taking place at Saucon Valley High School. Both the Varsity and JV teams will be playing on the 8 courts of the Panthers' turf. Come out to witness all the action and see if the ladies can move to 7-1 on the season.
